Whimple History Society -There's something for everyone!

# Free assistance to research historical Whimple records at the Heritage Centre
# Access to special events organised especially for members, with good company/good food and good fun at minimal cost
Of course, your membership helps to pay towards the activities which are laid on, as well as maintaining the upkeep of the Heritage Centre which is a great place to visit for villagers and visitors alike.
Annual membership is a very reasonable at €8.00 for single membership or £12.00 for a couple.
If you would like to join, please contact Dr Roger Smith on 01404 822244.

Whimple History Society’s many artefacts, photographs and records will be safeguarded for the future, thanks to a grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund.
The £19100 grant will enable the items to be recorded digitally and be available to the public whilst ensuring the originals are subject to less wear and tear. In addition, the Society will be purchasing projection equipment so that illustrated educational talks can be made to local groups and schools.
The digitised images will eventually be available on the Whimple History Society website  www.whimple.org   to allow people from all over the world to share in the heritage and culture of this fascinating village.
The Society’s base is The Whimple Heritage Centre, Church Road, Whimple which has recently been extended thanks to fundraising and generous donations from members. The extension is to be called 'The Whiteway Wing' and will house photographs and artefacts of The Whiteway Cyder Co Ltd which had its factory in the village up to 1989.

Whimple Heritage Centre

The History Society who own and run the centre are always willing to accept items relevant to Whimple or Whimple residents. If you have any such items, which are no longer required, you are encouraged to hand it to the staff at the centre who will arrange for it to be added to the archives.

The Cider with Roadies event which took place at the Heritage Centre was a great success. The weather was very kind with warm sunshine bringing out the visitors with their buckets and wheelbarrows of apples to be turned into juice by Pomona the travelling apple press. A good number of the visitors rolled up their sleeves and helped with the crushing and pressing, much to the delight of the CWR team who were glad of a break. There was a talk by one of the team about aspects of apple tree management which was well received and may give rise to further talks / workshops on this theme in the future. It was great to see the schoolchildren and Susie Langley, our new head teacher in the afternoon. The children had a great time washing the apples and feeding them into the crusher whilst others pumped the press handle. They all seemed to enjoy tasting the juice (probably not recognising it as the "healthy option"!) Many of the children and their parents turned up again to see the performance of The Big Squeeze, a play about Pip the Apple. The performance ended with a dance ably demonstrated by one of the actors and our very own Rob Wilkinson! A great time was had by all. A big thank you to all the members of the History Society who helped out with the event and kept the Heritage Centre open during the day.
